1927-1928 SEASON

This is a (long term) temporary page in order to provide stats and reports for the 1927-1928 season. There are links to a single Surrey Comet report (as a JPG picture) for each game via the match by match stats below. Eventually it is hoped to provide a full season summary and multiple reports for each game with any other news items of interest but this will be some way into the future.

Kingstonian and Casuals share a joint team picture for their Surrey Senior Cup match on 28 January 1928. Casuals, who were K's tenants, won 4-2.

Brief summary of the season:

There was a degree of tension at the club over the Summer after Charles Brockwell had temporarily resigned his position as Club Secretary late in the previous season due to allegations by the London F.A. of "Player Poaching" of which he had been unaware. He was re-elected once the matter was cleared up but two other committee members, including Sammy Emms, who had also resigned at the same time, did not seek re-election because of the existing tension. Fans were also upset about a "closed shop" attitude among the membership where no new members had been invited to join for two years.

K's lost Bert Mann to "business commitments" but Charlie Barter was a more than adequate replacement netting 36 goals in 33 appearances. They had also recruited Ted McCarthy who was to become a pivotal member of the team for many seasons and he chipped in with 15 goals. Frank Macey, hitting a low figure for him, got 20 goals and Billy Soper 13.

Despite another season of over 100 goals, results were mixed and K's were a long way from mounting a championship challenge. They again did badly in the major cup competitions- losing in the F.A. Cup and the Amateur Cup in their first games in both tournaments. The F.A. Cup game was against a professional Southern League team, Aldershot Town, and they were beaten 5-0 in the final qualifying round. Rivals Redhill knocked them out of the Amateur Cup by 5-3 on 3 inches of snow at Richmond Road where the only attempts to clear the snow had been in the goalmouths.

K's also went out of the Surrey Senior Cup in their first game in the competition, being beaten 4-2 by tenants, Casuals, in what was officially a home game for Kingstonian. The London Senior Cup went better with K's reaching the semi final, but for the third season running they were beaten in this competition by London Caledonians. With a league challenge beyond them, eventually finishing in 5th place, they were left with the Surrey Charity Shield to pick up any honours in the current season. However they were beaten 2-1 at Tooting Town in the final.

K's were able to field two reserves sides again with the main reserve team finishing 4th in the reserve section of the Athenian League, as well as making the final of the Surrey Intermediate Cup where they were beaten 4-2 in the final by Whyteleafe Albion. The 3rd team were less successful and finished second from bottom in the Kingston & District League Premier Division.

Details of the Reserves will be added at a later date.
